Torturous wound O' scab of healing.
Yesterday in between classes I attended a videoweb cast of some old smart guys talking about torture and Guantanamo. it was sort of each guy had twenty minutes to do a presentation thing. Well they talked about the history of torture, and how the word interrogation goat a bad name after Vietnam. The most interesting part of the history was a 1902 case concerning American conduct in the Philippines. The enemy was fighting in an uncivilized ( no uniform.. i.e guerrilla form) manner, and people stood on their legs and arms while someone forced a stick in their mouth to keep their jaws open and poured water into their mouth till they gagged or passed out or something. One judge commented how no matter how uncivilized the conduct of the enemy, that no modern nation should conduct themselves or be pulled down by the level of the enemy. So arguments about how horrible the enemy is now with beheadings and all that were put into context by a judge in 1902. That's why it is a big deal that they passed this new military tribunal bill, that even Arlen specter was critical of. But nobody cares right now, I forgot the Twins are much more important, god I hate the attention sports receives.
The other speaker was a physiologist who conducted tests in the 60's at Standford, one being putting normal people in a prison situation and then seeing the abusive behavior these normal people took part in when dealing with normal inmates. They had to shut the experiment down early because it took such a drastic turn. Well he said that the soldier in these prisons get all the blame and not the situation. The situation of prisons creates this behavior and it is up to the superiors to make sure conduct is appropriate and run a tight ship. He used this argument to debunk the administration and military explanation of "it's a few bad apples". oh and they said at Guantanamo that 8 or so of the inmates were under the age of 18 when first taken into custody and now that it has been opened up and lawyers can try to rectify the injustices, well because now that they are older then 18 they don't have to release them.
Anyways I am seeing a lot of roadkill these days, rabbits, squirrel and even one possum. I wonder if there is a country that has the highest amount of roadkill just because it has such large amounts of wildlife close to populations. I saw this PBS show on Cuban wildlife and once a year millions of these crabs migrate to the ocean to spawn and lay eggs. and they showed how as they cross the road, lots of cars ( the tourists don't even slow down they said) just crush dozens and dozens of crabs. Crab carcass crossroads should be a name of a street. well then the injured ones limp away sideways still, and then the vultures come out to feast on the dead and crushed ones.
Oh and Semper Fi means Always faithful, Fi is short for Fidelius in Latin, fidelity.
